2012 HERE WE COME!!!
St Colmcilles Community School
September has arrived and the class of 2011 has moved on to new beginnings. One of the most satisfying parts of my job as a guidance counsellor has to be ringing students and finding out that they made a smooth transition and are happy with their options. Sixth year is a year to work hard and be focussed. The Parents Association organise mock interviews for senior students during this first term. The Past Pupils association run an excellent career night. Students set up stands representing their different courses and colleges and provide information on their chosen career paths. Last year, the parents association supplied everyone with much needed refreshments and most senior students were able to attend and chat to past students currently studying their course of interest.  The best strategy is to collect  information at career lectures, open days and Higher Options and then process the information and formulate a plan with the help of their family, friends and the guidance team. The more research that is carried out, the better chance of finding the ideal course!
St Colmcilles Community School was chosen to help review the UCD prospectus last year. We are one of the top twenty feeder schools to this University. This year over eighty per cent of our students are in CAO courses. The most important aspect is that students are studying courses that they enjoy and that the experience will add to their chances of success in later life. Computer and environmental courses are popular as there is a skills shortage in these areas. Trends vary depending on the economic climate!
On Thursday 15th September 2011 our new group of sixth years went to Higher Options in the RDS and did some valuable career research and this in turn enables them to set their targets. The best piece of information I can get when I ring them next August is that they got their first choice and that they are happy. I wish them every success and if you set high goals you have a chance of attaining them.
